A friend of mine used to believe that all bosses were jerks. But at the time he had only worked at two different jobs with each job only having one boss.

However, he changed his mind when he moved on to other jobs in which the bosses in most of those jobs were pleasant people who were good to work for.

Having an understanding boss if you have serious issues with depression is key. Those supervisors who aren't so understanding don't realize that some people need to take a day off sometimes due to their illness.

It's one thing if an employee just doesn't feel like working. It's another matter if he or she really can't work because their depression is overwhelming them.

I think jobs can definitely contribute to depression, just like the lack of a job can. Any time a person is faced with incessant stress, anxiety-invoking stimuli, or situations that are either legitimately or perceived to be out of one's control, depression can crop up. This doesn't have to be long-term, dangerous depression, but common, mild to moderate episodes that improve with the implementation of coping skills or the removal of the stressor.

We are hugely impacted by our environment and daily routines, and I do think every person is capable of experiencing depression. The severity and treatment possibilities vary, however.

If it's the boss, how about a voodoo doll? Might not work but it might make you feel better anyway

For those with mental illness, working can make it worse. But not working isn't as easy as it sounds either, especially if you have or had career goals.

There's nothing worse than having a job that you hate, but you can't quit because you need the money.

Hey, forty or more hours a week at a job you dislike really stinks. There's only 168 hours within a week, after all.

People who have serious issues with depression often have exaggerated negative beliefs about themselves, and their self-esteem suffers as a result. Having a boss who's a jerk can really aggrevate feelings of depression and low self-worth. So yeah, a job can make depression even more difficult to deal with.

I take the negative anger from my job, and apply it directly to the freeweights.. As I am getting older, I sometimes throw mud, but at least I feel better..

If someone just doesn't feel like going to work, they still have to go. But if someone is so depressed that they can't work, than not going to work is a better idea. Of course, having a boss who doesn't understand clinical depression makes it hard, as he or she will insist that you come into work anyway. But more and more supervisors nowadays are understanding how terrible clinical depression can be.

I'm self-employed and own a gym..travel a lot. Keeps me from becoming depressed; I would probably fail at a regular 9-5.
