How busy does your call center get V? Is there ever a time when you guys are just so swamped there is a wait?

The last two times I've called 911 (once for a drunk driver, and once to report a drunk), I got put on hold long enough for me to just hang up.

We get on average 500 calls a day. There are days (weekends) that we get way more. Theres normally not much of a wait. We are required to answer the phone before the 2nd ring. When we are busy w/ an accident and their are 50 people calling it in, sometimes we cant answer them all, but we have their numbers and we call them back immediately. Thats only happened a few times in the last 2 years since I have been there.

But since you live in san diego, Im sure they get WAY more calls then us.

Nashville, TN (WFN) -- Although 911 is the American number for police emergencies, the real emergency is the number of stupid calls made by citizens.
According to a new book, "What's The Number For 911 Again?" (Andrews-McMeel), one person actually dialed 911 to ask if a policeman could drive by her house to unplug an electric coffee pot.
Another man called 911 to complain that he had spilled antifreeze on his pizza, while a guy who parked in a tow-away zone called to ask: "What's going to happen to my car?"
Then there's the man who wanted the 911 operator to tell him how long his "24-hour flu" was going to last. But the crappiest 911 call of them all came from a frantic man who told operators, "I took a laxative last night, and now I have diarrhea."

Let me tell you... I have had some stupid calls too.

A lady calls in, wants an officer to come by to turn her lights off.

Same lady calls back about a month later wanting an officer to turn her water off.

Ive had a guy call in to report his weed stolen. (he went to jail)

Some people call 911 to get a number (we are NOT 411!!!)

One thing that KILLS me, is when a cell phone calls in and hangs up, well we are required to call it back. So, I dial the number and they say... I didnt call you. Im thinking "hell, I guess I picked your damn number out of the back of my pocket to call your monkey ass"
Its drives me INSANE!!! Even when the resn call 911, we call back and they say the same thing, we didnt call. Noone was on the phone. Our response, is your address ### whatever lane? If so, YOUR number called us which means SOMEONE called 911 either by mistake or for a REASON! lol

I actually had the cops show up to my house one night.. bout Eleve clock at night because they had a 9II call from my house but when they tried to call back they could get no answer..

I told them they would not get an answer because I have no phones hooked up in my house, only the computers are hooked to the phone lines.. still dont know how that one happened?

quite the remote chance that the modem in your computer produced analog electrical signals, maybe from viewing a site, or chatting, or some other reason, and those electrical signals were conotated into a group that represented 911 on the phone line, and the phone company equipment picked it up as an emergency call, and thus, forwarded information to the e-crew. but, thats a remote chance, and should have been part of the design of the modems to ensure such would not happen.

but thats if that scenario could happen. i dont know if it can. just an idea.

Which would be even odd considering at the time the cops showed up, everyone was in bed and the comps were all shut down.. tripping phone lines, or lines got crossed somewhere.. never figured out what happened, but it never happened again.

hmm - there is still a possiblity - spoofed address using another modem. that would be one hell of a pullover too. the chance of that is, in my view, equal to that of god making the universe. you might believe differently, so, in your view, the chance of it happening might equate to that of the big bang.

Sometimes Bellsouth or whatever phone company has the wrong address on their Ani/ali. Everytime we see a wrong address, we have to fill out paperwork to get it fixed. Yes, there are times that 911 gets the wrong address (by a mistake.. I have done it) But when some one calls from their resn, we just transfer the address over which is hard to mess up.

When I did that booboo it was bad.. I cried and cried. This guy called in and said that his kitchen was on fire. I got his address and VERIFIED cross streets. He said that was correct. Well, I sent the fire truck and they couldnt fine it. I called him back and found out it was rd not dr. We had 3 streets w/ the same name just different rd,dr,lane. Luckily the fire was out and very minimal damage done. I went home and cried and cried, but he did verify his cross streets and everythign, so obviously he wasnt listening. When I train people I tell them that story so they can be more careful and see that everyone can make mistakes, even vet distpatchers.
