As it moves closer to land it picks up speed and force rapidly. Then it suddenly slams into the shoreline much fiercer then thought possible killing thousands more people and destroying hundreds of thousands of more homes." Since the 1970's hurricanes have become 100 % more dangerous."

People rant and rave all the time about how a mandatory evacuation was never made for Katrina...that's bullshit. I was there IN NEW ORLEANS and, on that Saturday, they had made the evacuation mandatory just before we left town. That was 36 hours before the levees broke. I had room in my car for 2 or 3 people...had anyone said "hey I need to get out of here" I would've let them ride w/ us. The bellboy at our hotel said that he was gonna ride it out in New Orleans...said he'd been through much worse before and was just gonna hang on. That was the mentality down there...only afterwards did people realize what a mistake it was. Hell, I'll be honest...I looked at the skies and said "it's still pretty out...it doesn't look bad." Luckily my mother is much older and smarter than me and she said "no, we've GOT TO GO."

Last time we hoped for the best. This time were being smart, and expecting the worst.

Seeing Nadin, General Honore and Anderson Cooper brings it all back. It does seem like they're much better prepared this time and have done all they can to keep people safe. LA's new Governor also seems like he's on the ball, taking all the Ferderal help that he can. Prayers for anyone in Gustav's path. |

I went through the gulf coastal area in 2007, 2 years after Katrina. Block after block after block of residences looked like they had been hit by a nuclear blast, minus the burn effect. For many miles it looked like almost the only thing left standing were the concrete foundations, flat concrete slabs where houses used to be. Pass Christian appeared to have been wiped off the map, and was being rebuilt, but with this latest monster storm headed that way, their efforts may have been in vain, for now anyway. It is a wise policy that gives such forces of nature a wide berth. ![]() ![]() Last edited by Wilton1978; 09-01-2008 at 12:18 AM. |
