I have built one system from ordered parts, a few I have built from spares; I have upgraded a few more, including my first build (which, sadly to state, is no longer a part of my possessions, because for some fucked up reason, the processor and motherboard decided to not be friends any more).

My first build:

Some Intel Pentium-4 board
Pentium 4, 2.4GHz, "C" edition (533 FSB, 512?kb Cache, really low-end)
128 MiB Kingston 266MHz DDR
No video card, iIrc
120GB Maxtor SATA-150
Sony DVD+/-RW
Enermax Case
Enermax 485W "Liberty" Power Supply

^^ From rememberance, I could look up the purchase order, iffn I felt like looking.

The last setup in that box was:

ASUS P4C800-E "Deluxe"(whatever the deluxe stands for..)
Intel Pentium 3.0E GHz
2 GiB Kingston DDR400
BFG 7600GS 256 MiB AGP-8x
"New" 120GB Maxtor (First one failed, RMA'd, got another one in replacement, from Maxtor)
Additional 160GB Western Digital SATA-300
Sony DVD+/-RW
LG CD-RW
Enermax Case
Enermax 485W "Liberty" Power Supply

All I have left of ^^ are the two hard drives.

I built my computer and installed a water cooling system. I built around the first Pentium D Dual Core Processor that came out and the thing ran so hot I had to put water cooling in. They've improved them dramatically since then and heat is not near the problem it was with the oriiginals. But I've built or rebuilt quite a few.

I've built 2 for me in the past, one the motherboard went kaput... A few weeks after the warranty expired... Grrrr

The last one I built was:
4gb Ram
Nvidia 8800GT 512mb
AMD Atholon Dual Core 6200+ (3.2ghz)
Windows Vista 64 Home Edition

I haven't brought all my boxes over yet from my old house so I can't remember what motherboard I have exactly, but it's an Asus with 16x SLI capability - because that's my next upgrade when I have the money.

Hey Zorak---curious why you would put Windows Vista in a Puter you built?

Vista is actually ok. It's not as stable as I would have liked to seen, but it is a good OS. Problem I noticed is that it just requires a pretty beefy computer to handle it if you want to take full advantage of it.

Since I was part of the beta tests, I received 4 free copies of vista (2 32-bit and 2 64-bit) and out of the 3 system builds I used with vista, only one has shown me problems and that was only after the graphics card blew in it and I had to replace it (vista doesn't like change). Otherwise if your system can handle it, I wouldn't shy away from vista just because some people don't like it.

Here is a How To manual for that, but to be honest, these days it's cheaper to buy the pc and just upgrade it here and there.

I'm waiting until they get all the bugs out (and from what I've read they are still numerous). XP is stable as hell--no problems whatsoever--best OS Windows has ever put out. The worst was ME by far. I know people who have reformatted purchased computers to put XP on after being fed up with Vista.

Keep in mind the type of computer alot of those "downgraders" are using. Generally they are just basic home computers and yes, vista will bog those computers down and XP is the best choice for them. But according to Microsoft, this Vista release is almost mirroring the lifeline of ME. It's just a new os to bridge the gap between XP and Windows 2009?, like ME was for 98 to XP. But also remember, that windows 98 was a thousand times more stable then XP was when it was first released. After numerous updates and service packs, XP has become stable. Vista has that opportunity but it sounds like Microsoft is just willing to scrap it.

People don't like change really.
XP when it came out was awful, and I think generally the consensus among all said so.

Now of course it's described as the best OS Windows ahve ever put out, as illustrated by Mulder.
Personally, I thought Windows 2000 was better than anything they've done.

Edit: But I'd agree ME was fucking dire lol, I actually had it on one comptuer for a while.....

I've used all the windows OS's from 3.11 and I'd have to say 98 was my favorite. But unfortunetly that doesn't matter since technology is leaving, if not already left the stable OS's behind and progressing further.

the biggest thing to start looking for is programs to start utilizing a 64-bit architecture, now that will provide everybody with some interesting possibilities.
