There has been some classics that I can admire but don't love as much as everyone else, but that doesn't mean I think they're shit. The Godfather falls in there. If I can think of a shitty one though I'll come back. And a thing with Citizen Kane is that it can never live up to the hype. It innovated a lot at the time and now all the stuff it did is easily done.

But I'd like to point out- Easy Rider is considered a counterculture film, Easy Rider explores the societal landscape, issues, and tensions in the United States during the 1960s, such as the rise and fall of hippie movement, drug use, and communal lifestyle. Today, it is regarded as one of the most important film in the history of American cinema. (quote from Wikipedia). I liked it. Citizen Kane is not really my kind of movie, but it has been called one of the greatest movies of it's time, mostly because of the innovations in film making that it employed. I was impressed with it's style, but I found the story to be oppressive. See the "innovations" section of this Wiki Article. The God Father is an incredible movie, impressive story telling and cinematography. It might have helped if you read the book first. On the AFI (American Film Institue) all time great movie list, it comes in Number Two behind... Citizen Kane. Some of the criteria that AFI uses to rank films are lasting popularity, historical significance, and cultural impact.

I don't disagree that The Godfather is an incredible movie. Some people fail to see that the making of a classic movie isn't always how innovative or original it is. The Godfather only does what you said. It's not a multi-layered wankfest, it's just a well told story that looks good. And that's enough, I just don't love it. Here's a fun quote from the great Ingmar Bergman, who is one of the greatest directors of all time, about Citizen Kane (not saying I agree, but since we're discussing it, might as well include a negative opinion): Quote:
