I have a friend who happens to be a Christian fundamentalist, and damn proud of it. So needless to say, we love debating about whether some of the lessons of the Bible are appropriate in today's society.

So my question is, taking into consideration the social differences between modern day and ancient times, are the guidelines outlined in the Bible still applicable to modern society?

i say yes. No, they cannot all be DIRECTLY applied in context as they were back in the day....but they teach important lessons I think that can be applied in today's world. The old testament doesn't really count, because the new testament was written as an "update" to God's rules, etc....basically God's "personality" (if you could call it that) and admittance into heaven was changed after jesus arrived.

It's all a matter of perspective. Obviously, Christians will say it can still be applied today and non-Christians will more than likely disagree.

That's not the 10 commandments, those are in Exodus and Deuteronomy. And the book of Leviticus came long before the book of Matthew, which is why I said the golden rule is based off of the Old Testament.

However, you have to take into consideration whether the Bible is really God's words. God obviously didn't just take a mighty pen and paper, write down his thoughts, and chuck it down to the mortals. Humans did the physical act of writing the Bible. How can we be so certain that those who wrote the Bible were only transcribing the word of God? For all we know, they could have been creating the word of God.
