What ages are your kids?

You can check the National Sex Offender Registry: Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Registry and find out who is a sex offender in your area.

Of course, most offenders have not been caught yet so you can't just go by that.
Teach your kids that no adult has full authority over them...except you and make sure they know that they can come to you and tell you anything. This includes their minister/Rabi or priest, uncle, grandfather, cousin, teacher etc.

I personally knew a seemingly awesome guy who was a teacher at a middle school in rural Indiana. He was divorced and had custody of his 3 year old daughter and was dating a friend of mine at the time. He was "grooming" one of his 13 year old student's to become his victim. She came to his home one evening on the premise of babysitting his toddler...the girl's mother became suspicious and drove by his house only to notice his car was still there. She banged on his front door while he had her on his bed...his hands in her pants while he was kissing her. He was arrested, posted bail and was charged with "sexual misconduct with a minor"(a Class D felony) and his teaching license was revoked.
All he got was probation and he was a registered sex offender for only 5 years. He's now living in another state...not registered as a sex offender anymore and works for the CDC.(he was a brilliant math teacher) I noticed yesterday he has a myspace page and all his friends are young females.

Also be careful of the sex offender registries. I understand their purpose, but in many states you can be put on them for doing ANYTHING to a child, sexual or not. For instance, here in Texas there is a bug uproar about an 18 year old who was attacked by a 15 year old and after defending himself was charged with assault. Once convicted, they put him on the sex offender list for life, even though he did nothing sexual to the minor.

They can be witch hunts as useful as they are.

not to mention once you're on the list you can't get housing near schools or child-filled areas.

There are also some registered that I wouldn't consider dangerous...for example a 18 year old who was sexually involved with a 16 year old etc. But the majority that are registered are indeed sexual predators.

in NY i don't think there's a sexual offense in that situation so long as there's 4years or less of an age difference.

Yah, it just sucks for the people that really didn't do anything predatory and have to live with that stigma anyway. It's the type of wide net our justice system likes to throw. It's okay to get three innocent people as long as we get fifty guilty people. Like the senator who said he thought killing one innocent man was okay provided we killed the guilty ones as well (and we all know for a fact several innocent people have been put to death in this country).

Go read the story about the Georgia kid who was 17 and a 15 year old initiated sexual contact with him. It just happened to get caught on tape (because they were at a party), and he not only got 10 years in jail, he got convicted of aggravated molestation and will be a registered sex offender the rest of his life. He could be out of jail right now, but refuses to admit he molested the girl. The prosecutor in the case is a total prick and basically said "Well, he did the crime, he can do the time" even though the girl, her parents and the video tape clearly show she initiated the contact. The law was changed, but not retroactively so that he could be retried under the new law (aka case thrown out).

This guy should have been registered for the rest of his life. His explanation is that it was just a slip and she was very well endowed for her age.

Although I find what he did reprehensible because of who he believed he was chatting with. What I find more underhanded and dispicible is police doing this in sting operations.

I understand that underage children need to be protected, but this sting operation was a fraud, no underage children were harmed during this. I don't understand how this is a crime to talk to someone dirty on the internet.

Half the women on this board could have Chris, bill, Steve, Steve, Crystal, Clare and myself arrested for indecent behaviour if they wanted to. But yeah, "underage" blah.

Yah, it is a scary thought. He was basically arrested because he THOUGHT he was talking to a 13 year old girl, and because he obviously did it once, he must have done it before, or will do it again. It's almost like Minority Report pre-crime shit.
